Hi all

Hope someone who knows a bit more about electronics than me can help with this. My girlfriend owns one of these: http://www.opticalvision.co.uk/astronomical_accessories/power_tanks
It’s a battery pack for a motorised telescope mount, a 12v battery with a 7AH capacity and the power output is via a car cigarette lighter socket. If I bought an inverter to connect to it, for how long could it power an Eheim 2224 filter?

I know the 2224 is an 8 watt filter and for the standard uk 240v mains supply I came up with a figure of 210 hours using this website: http://www.jobsite-generators.com/power_calculators.html

Would be very grateful if someone could confirm if I have worked all this out correctly, 210 hours seem very high.

Thanks

You would need to factor in the losses for your inverter, these would be pretty high as they tend to generate quite a lot of heat.

Hi, in all likeliness, it'd be about 20 hours. I've tried it before, not worth the hassle :( I'd suggest just buying a 12v pump and making your own filter. Then it'd last for weeks!!

20 hours would be more than enough, half that would be plenty.

The reason I ask is we're looking at having the house re-wired next year so need some way of powering the filter when the mains is switched off during the day.

Next question is which inverter to try.

Tesco, Halfords and Maplin all sell inverters for £15 upwards.

If you borrow a spare car battery from someone, you should get a lot more hours out of it just in case your rewiring takes a little longer.

how about an uninteruptable power supply or UPS?
