Battery Backup.?

Has anyone ever considered protecting there aquatic pets with a battery backup generally used for computer systems?

Not only would it smooth the current which could be beneficial for the electro-propelled motors but it could save your fish.

Just wondering if anyone has or is considering it?

I do this already, i have 2 ups systems, running all my filters only. come in handy a couple of times.

UPS is an "unterruptible power supply" nothing to do with petrol. look it up

i was a bit confused since theres a couple of doors/rooms until you get outside and you can't really have your back door open all night and have a massive power lead running though to your tank!!

Whats this ups?

EDIT

thanks :good:

IMO it's not really worth it if you're afraid of a power failure. The purpose of battery backups is to give you enough time to properly shut down your servers/computers in event of a power outage, or keep them from shutting off in a shortage. Battery backups used for computers on average give you about 20 minutes of battery time, and theyre quite pricey too. a backup ranging from 100-150$ would probably get you about 5-10 minutes of uptime (which i'll have my tanks shut off longer than that when i'm cleaning them). we have a $2,500 UPS at work that powers our servers for about 20 minutes, and i'm sure could keep a fishtank powered for an hour, but that's overkill.

So at most it will keep everything powered if you have a shortage, but if you're in a situation that you're out of power hours on end then you're kinda screwed. But how often does that happen??

just my thoughts, hope this helps..

You are correct generally they give you 20 mins give or take for loads as heavy as Servers etc. However I have large ones and with the load of the filters will last at least 72 hours, so for me as i got them free it is worth it. I agree though for most people it is an unnecessary expense.

All depends on what you want.

You have active and not active UPS.

active = continuous charging of battery the computers are ran from the battery current supplying a steady clean current.
Not Active = power from outlet charges battery and computer is ran from outlet ... battery not engaged until power from the outlet is removed.

Also computers have the ability to receive instructions for example to shut down when the battery is low.

and an average these days is about 2hrs I thought.

I will have to look it up.
