could you give me some ideas on a basic setup for 2 fancy goldfish.

tank size , heater wattage and filter type is all i want your opinion on.if you can suggest a fish tank and filter that would be fantastic.

i have been keeping fish for 8 years but never goldfish.
ive just moved into a new house and have sold all my other tanks.i needed to make room for my 21month old sons toys etc.i couldnt fit them all.well i can fit up to a 3ft tank and ive decided to get 2 fancy goldfish.i want a basic setup and want opinions from those who have kept goldfish before.

im looking to get a blackmoor and a red cap oranda.i read they need 20 us gallons for 1 and 10 us gallons for each other.thats 113 uk litres so would a 165 litre tank be good enough for the both??

A 165l would be ideal for a couple of fancy goldies. Three foot is plenty of length; they're not far or fast swimmers!

You don't need a heater, unless your house gets very cold; if that's that case, you'd want a 200W one, but turned down to 20/22°C.

External filters are the best for goldies, as they're so messy. They need big filters, and a suitable internal would take up a lot of tank space, not to mention being harder to maintain.

I own 2 fancy goldfish too, one 6 inch Black Moor and 1 white goldfish with an orange head, on whom I can get no more specific breed information from the pet store than "Fancy Goldfish".  I wouldn't reccomend getting a tank any less than 25 gallons, because their waste builds up and provides an unbelievable amount of ammonia and work for the keeper.  I keep my fishies in a 25 gallon tank.  You're going to need three major electric appliances: a filter, a heater, and an air pump.  Don't question the air pump, just trust me.  Goldfish breath oxygen through the water, and air pumps incorporate it into the water so they aren't gasping for breath.  My goldies are lethargic and sick when their air pump isn't on.

I'm not sure about heater wattage to be honest: I was helped out by a PetSmart store associate when selecting my heater and it's worked fine.  Emo Kid is right about the heater in that goldfish are cold water fish, but I reccomend keeping a heater on hand as it's a major part of the natural cure for bacteria diseases in your fish.

Aqueon is a great and professional brand to buy from.  If you don't mind my tagging on, API Stress Coat X is a must have when keeping goldfish, along with aquarium salt.  My Black Moor was suffering from scale damage and I dosed him regularly with these two wonder cures.  The completely natural tonics healed him all by themselves.
