Base Rock In Freshwater ?

my mum and dad are starting a tank with a pair of angel fish and some cories

its a 3ft by 2ft by 1.5 ft lxhxw

they want ocean rock in it is this ok

I'm pretty sure ocean rock will make the water really hard. Granite with it's black and white marbling and veins looks nice and is pretty inert as far as I know, would they consider that instead ? Tall pieces of slate stacked realistically would look good too.
