Is it possible for bamboo to thrive in a tank?

My friend does it. It isnt dead. But anyway, i think its perfectly fine. As far as i know it doesnt harm anything so if you like how it looks i guess you could go for it!

ive heard you should only use lucky bamboo.

I've seen it a few times on display tanks in some aquatic shops. It looks great. They've filled in the larger bamboos with sand and planted in the tops (Java fern etc.) It would look great in an Asian biotope.
