Bamboo Canes As Decor

Dear All, I know its only vaguely plant related! But in several books on Aquascaping there are tanks with bamboo canes "planted" to replicate reeds on the water. If done well it seems to look quite effective.
So to the query, I presume ordinary garden canes are used and if so what treatment is needed prior to putting them in to the tank. Also, what method is best used to put them in place........obviously they cannot be planted sigularly in thne gravel!

I think they ones usually used in those sort of set-ups normally rot after a while. Garden ones might be ok, as long as they're not treated with anything to prevent rot.

I personally wouldn't use any bamboo, I have read so many stories regarding it rotting in tanks.
