Are Badis badis and Dario dario the same species? I saw some Scarlet Badis today at a new fish store (a cool one!) and have been doing some reasearch on 'em. I'm getting pictures and info with both scientific name, but the pictures look like the same species of fish... -_-

Would the Scarlet Badis do okay with Pygmy Corys and some kind of Dwarf Rasbora or Tetra, or are they too predatorial for that?

Thanks!

Hmmm. Thanks Wolf. The guy at the lfs said that he'd never seen these badis get much bigger then they already were (perhaps an inch long). Yeah, at 8cm I'd say they'd munch my Pygmy Corys! That wouldn't be any good!

couple more links for you :)

Scarlet Badis

Badis Badis

I've have owned both, I found the scarlets to be very senitive, and no longer have any.

But the normal Badis, I have 3 (2 female and 1 male.) they keep themselfs to themself, and are readly strange to watch.

I personaly say if you can get some, get them, as I very rarely see them.

Hmmm... But they might eat my Pygmy Corys and I don't have room in my 29-gallon (okay, I could probably find a corner in there for 'em, but the tank is borderline fully-stocked now, so I don't want to add anymore fish; then again...). I do have a spare 10-gallon, but no filter or hood for it. Money's kind of tight right now, so I can't really just go out and buy another filter and stuff... But they're so cute and so neat... But they're $9/each.... But...

Decisions, decisions...

Oh go on you know you want to.

If it was me, I see if my LFS could hold them, or at least get more in, when I have more money.

Though the last time I said I was short of money, I go a free fish, worth about £3.

how large are pygmy corries? Can a 3 inch fish actually eat them? I never though the corries would be that small

Pygmy Corys get to be about an inch long :) Very cute and little!

Yeah, I do want 'em... Kinda need to discuss it with hubby first, though, 'cause money's pretty short around here. I wanted to take him to the store today, but he needs to sleep - didn't get enough sleep before work yesterday and has to have his sleep interrupted again today :(

I'll let y'all know if I get 'em!

Just found the following information regarding the two aforementioned species:
Dario dario, formerly known to hobbyist as Badis sp. scarletgem and Badis bengalensis, from Brahmaputra drainage in Assam and northern West Bengal, India is the smallest percoid fish known so far. The major different of fish in the genus Badis and Dario I observed so far is the fact that Dario sp. is very easy to sex (like this pair) while both sexes of the Badis sp. seems to be very much alike. Behavior wise, Dario sp. are eggs scatter while Badis sp. are cave spawner.
From: http://siamensis.org/article/a014.asp

The species I was interested in was labeled as a Scarlet Badis, so is probably a Dario (looks like the one pictures a ways down on the web page).

The next question is, how big do they get? They seem pretty little and the guy at the lfs (who seemed to know what he was talking about) said he hasn't seen 'em much bigger than the ones I saw.

Hmmm...
