Well recent high nitrates took there toll on my firefish who i just found dead. Now im only left with a blackfin clown who i might take back. I am setting up a 20 gallon soon. Should i wait until i set my new tank up or should i give the fish to the pet shop? I have got the nitrates down now.

Well i know its soon but what can i put in with a blackfin clown in a 20 gallon tank if anything? Thanks

Just how high were your nitrates? It takes a HELL of a lot to kill any ray-finned fish. Might want to look for other possible causes.

I tested for everything including copper (dont know why) and the only thing that was different was the nitrates which were about 40ppm (is it ppm? yeah). Only other thing was my tomato clown could have done it. what could it be? No finrot no whitespot or anything like that.

humm, wierd that he'd live that long and just die... If he was a new fish I'd say cyanide poisoning, but not after 4 months. 40ppm of nitrate is nowhere near enough to kill a fish. Heck, I've seen firefish alive in FO tanks with 100+ppm in dentists offices and the like.

Was he eating?

I gave him and the clown, bloodworm (live and frozen mixed it up) Daphnia(sp) (live and frozen) Flake and freeze dried food. 1 each day so they didnt get board and go off the food. He had a pile of rocks which he made his home so he wasn't stressed about that. Its really bugging me because whatever killed him might kill my clown so i need to find out.
