Does anyone know how Betta fry are supposed to behave? It seems that my fry have a good survival instinct- to HIDE. It's all they do. You take a look at their tank and it looks deserted. Even if you stick your arm in there and move stuff around, you won't find any. The fry are in the tiny crevices between the rocks, and they stay there all day long! They're pretty small and very hard to see, but they are alive.

Is this how it's supposed to be? Do your fry all behave like this?

I have no expericence with fry, but im guessing that they just get frightened and try to keep hidden and safe.
You have to remember their only very young and still are very nervous there still expericencing there surroundings.
Thats just what i think, ^.

its not good for the fry if you keep sticking your arm in there tank and start shaking stff around otherwise this is bound to happen but i know your trying to find the fry but don't do it until their a litte more used to poeple and being in the tank you know

I havent had fry but would reckon it is just an instinct. Just practice being near the tank and normal flow of traffic going by them to get them used to people.

The only reason I try to stir the tank up is to allow the food I'm putting in to reach them. I pour a little brine shrimp in every day.. they never come out, so I can't ever tell if they're eating it! For all I know, they're starving to death! Even if there's no one in the room, they never come out. They're still in the same tank they were conceived in (a 29 gal). Before I put gravel in for them, the tank had a bare bottom.. and they would hide in the algae scum that started to collect there. There was hardly.. and it turns out I had 23 fish hiding in there! I thought I had lost them all!

Anyone have fry that hide like this?

29 gallon is huge for betta fry! no wonder you keep losing them :) I never see mine much and they are in a 10 gallon! only when I jar them I can see them clearly, yes they do hide a lot so don't worry and they will also find food in there on their own so no need to stir it up for them, how old are they now?

They were conceived on June 22/23, so like 3 weeks. I wanted to make sure they had plenty of room!

That's great :good: they need plenty of room while they are developing, either that or daily water changes in small spaces which is what I'm having to do :shout: :D and at 3 weeks they still have plenty of growing to do and then you will begin to see them more
Best of luck with your little ones!

Tell me about yours, betta fish! How old are they, and where have you put them? Are they big enough so that the water changes are easier? Can you see them eating? Pics?? :hey:

Mine were born in May I have 12 in total all in 2 litre jars floating in a 60 litre tank with a heater and filter and are getting daily water changes, the biggest one has been moved to a 5 gallon tank now:

he is being fed on a mix of live bloodworm, mosquito larvae and brine shrimp, all the others are still on walter worms for the time being, and yes when they are separated in this way you can see them eating  I will try and get some pics of a few of them over the weekend :good:

As promised here are some pics of my betta babies :)
