I reently had a mother guppy give birth to more than 30 babies!!! however about seven of them seem like they are smaller and have a bent spine. They are healthy and happy. Is this just a birth defect??? and if so is it common??????????????

Pics to follow.need new batteries for cam.

Probably inbreds, if they are ok and doing well there should be no problem, i have had this as well but all the ones i have had like this grow up to be fine although there spine stays bent..

Lots of people seperate them and get rid, but its up to you, i keep mine if it not causes a problem :)

I had this with some Gambusia marshii I bred around 20 years ago.

There are a few possible causes, one is caused by a calcium deficiency, the other is a birth defect. I am sure that there are other reasons.

What you do with them depends upon you, if you are serious about breeding your fish then get rid of them, just incase it is genetic, unless you want tanks full of bent fish of course.

It do not mean inbreds are the problem ther are a nuumber of reasons for this

I'm serious mate!

Bendy was born with a major kink in her body.

She swims around fine dispite the defect.

I was not taking the mick!

two of my bred guppies have bent spines they feed fine and seem to be well. When you breed guppies you will always get the odd one with a bent spine, they are not inbred.

genetic deformity brought about by inbreeding. Who said guppies where hardy fish :)
