Hello it's me again, here to sap all of your knowledge :)

Is their a specific temperature (low) that filter bacteria could die from?
I know if pump is removed from water for a certain period of time that this is detrimental to the bacterial survival, but nt sure whether a temporary dip in temperature would have the same effect?

Reason I ask is I have just removed an extremely mature sponge from an external filter which wrapped around a new filter for my smaller tank fits perfectly. I have the thermometer going to warm up water (use RO not tap hence not pre warmed enough) and this thought has just occurred to me :/

I have half filled with RO and half filled with water from the old tank that I have just cleaned.

Thank you
P.s temp sitting around 18 at the mo

I'd have thought you'd be ok - I think it's the same bacteria that populates a coldwater filter as does a tropical. Not 100% certain though.

Thanks lock_man I was thinking the same re cold water fish bacteria.
Wasnt sure if bacteria may have been 'shocked' the things you think of after the event!
Ammonia is looking good, so I guess I would of had a reading by now if I killed some off, so fingers crossed :)

a drastic change in temperature can easily kill bacteria.....this is why you should always rinse your filter media in the same temperature water as your tank is.....

The temperature for optimum growth of nitrifying bacteria is between 77-86° F (25-30° C).
Growth rate is decreased by 50% at 64° F (18° C).
Growth rate is decreased by 75% at 46-50° F.
No activity will occur at 39° F (4° C)
Nitrifying bacteria will die at 32° F (0° C).
Nitrifying bacteria will die at 120° F (49° C)
Nitrobacter is less tolerant of low temperatures than Nitrosomonas. In cold water systems, care must be taken to monitor the accumulation of nitrites.

Yeah I wrote all that. ;)

Thanks Coolie, hopefully I will be ok as temperature was creeping up within the hour. I am testing two/three times daily for ammonia so fingers crossed they have all survived.
That's really interesting info though, thanks!

I didn't really write it myself, I was just kidding.

Ha ha ha ha, perhaps I should just 'google' next time then? ;)

No, No, keep asking questions, I can google it, and look really important and knowledgable. ;)
