hi,
if i had my brother send me some of his filter media...from his tank (2 years old)..how long would the bacteria live.Could he just put it in a tub, with tank water.
what would be the maximum time it could survive ?

I don't know exactly how long it would survive. I do know that the bacteria would need oxygen to live, so just a plain tub of tank water wouldn't work for long trips. How far away is your brother? How would he be sending you the filter media? I don't know if an oxygen tablet in the water would help....? Maybe some one else can clear that up for you. If it's going through the mail I wouldn't count on the bacteria actually living through the trip.

hi,
Yes it would be by post, will forget that idea then. Will see if i can get some from lfs.

Thanks for advice
Tracy

the media must be submerged in water that contains pure ammonia. as soon as ammonia reads 0 in the water, the bacteria will start dying off.

I'm sure it could be shipped like fish, in a bag full of air but with ammonia in the water as mentioned. I'm not sure how long it would take for the ammonia to run out. It would definitely have to be sent next day but I would think it would be fine but I guess there's no guarantee.
