As sometof you know I went away for 3 weeks, mum looked after the tank for a week and recorded no casualties, then the pet sitter took over and it all went to pot.
I've got a 300L deep tank with a external filter and bubble wall, I cleaned the filter with tank water a few days before I left and did a 40% water change the day I left, I got a container and instructed the sitters to fill that with food for the fish (enough to feed them all with out polluting the water till I got back)
I thought I had covered all basis but when I got back the tank was all green, the ornaments have a film of black green algae and most of my fish are dead hiding or missing.
The tank has been established for many years with very minimal problems.
Stocked with
2 pink danios which are now all dead
3 danios only two remain
Two giant danios only one left
2 Molly's both are hiding
10 danio fry 1 missing
One koi looking a bit shabby

The water parameters were fine when I left
I have done a 25% water change but the levels are still high, I think that there may be dead fish stuck somewhere forcing the levels up.
I want to clean the filter but when can I do that as I don't want to do it too soon after large water changes..... The tank has many heavy bits of slate rocks and wood so locating dead fish is quite difficult, how much water and when do you think I should change?
It seems so empty in the tank now, I'm moving very soon also so is there anything special I should do? Obviously I'm not restocking till I get to the new place....
The plan is to do partial water changes with minimal feeding and locating fish bodies till the water settles down....
Thanks

What are the ammonia and nitrite levels now?

Hiya,
Ammonia is 0.5
Nitrite is <0.3

One of the Molly's have come out of hiding since doing today's water change,
I'm out of tap safe so I'm off to get some more now then I'm doing another change tomorrow,

I forgot to mention the corys, I have 5 and they seem unaffected which is good :)
I just don't understand what has happened, I've been away before with no problems?

Hi,
If anyone's interested in the outcome, I found the source of high ammonia it was actually my three Lava snails, they were about 8cm long and both were dead and rotting in each side of the aquarium, I did a full vacuum today and moved all the decor to find any fishy dead bodies, I only found a head.... The snails were alive and moving across the sides of the aquarium when I left so as to what killed everything is a mystery....
At least I have it sorted I think.

Wow, sorry to hear of your losses :(

As to how this happened, could almost be anything really.

Hope the rest of your stocking recovers and all is ok now.
