Hi all

I noticed the other week that my tbar cichlids were getting a bit close and digging everywhere. I know this is common behaviour when they are breeding as i had a male previously with the current female who bred twice but the killed the fish.

So i decided to set up a nursery tank ready incase they lay eggs.

I got in the other day and noticed 200-300 eggs in amongst the grasses i have. I cut off a strand of the grass with 35 eggs on and placed it in the other tank. Out of these 35, 22 eggs have hatched into little fish and the others have just turned into white balls, all the other eggs in the other tank with the parents have hatched bar 10.

I would like to catch the majority of the other babies but dont want to injury them so how would you catch them as they may get caught and injured in the net.

Also what would everyone feed them?
Thanks

Hiya mate. Be careful when you remove them as the male will probably turn on the female and may beat her up.

Don't worry about catching them, just use a net and then turn it inside out when you put them in the other tank.

I would feed them on microworm and then baby brine shrimp.

If you leave a handful of fry with the parents, the male should leave the female be. This has worked for me in the past with convicts. Good luck!

I was thinking about using a siphon but thought that must be pretty distressing for the fish, i used a net in the end like you have said on here and worked fine.

I left about 10 in the tank with the parents but this morning cant seem to find them so they have moved them or killed them.

The others are doing fine in there own tank and are all starting to swim.

Thanks for the info on the food.

Cheers
