hi, i have baby platies in my netted breeding trap and i was wondering how old they have to be before i release them into my community tank. The biggest fish i have in there are 3 mollys. I will also be selling some when they are ready so if anyone is interested pm me.

2-3 months

I think I must be very lucky then 'cos I didn't use a breeding net and have lots of growing fry! I have two adult platies, an adult sailfin molly and an adult red tailed black shark in a tank together. The platies had babies 3 weeks ago - I left them in there because I had no spare fry tank - I expected them to all get eaten but amazingly most, or all, are still there, getting bigger by the day (about 20 of them - not sure how many there were in the fry batch to be honest but not many more than have survived from what I saw).

Then my female guppy in another community tank had babies and I rescued about 10 of those and put them in with the platy fry, thinking if the platy fry survived in there then the guppies will have a better chance in there than in the other tank. And I was right - the guppy fry are now a week and half old and doing well. So I have big fry and little fry with a few adult fish living quite happily together.

None of the adult fish bother the fry - not even the RTBS, which I am totally amazed at. I watch as the fry swim right up to him and pick at the food he is eating on the gravel - boy, they are brave little'uns - and he doesn't seem to care!

Let's hope those are not famous last words :hyper:

I would go by size and not necessarily by age.

I have a tank full of livebearers and i always release the fry at (---------) size, about 3-4 weeks old.

Yep rule of thumb is when they are too large to be swallowed!! :good:

thanks all. useful advice! athena i cb your rtbs hasnt bothered the fry!
