heres the photos of the babies, anybody tell me if they are gold sevs or convicts? I'm betting convicts.

Yep, Convicts. The one in the first picture, and second picture on the left (think they're the same) looks a little 'roundish'?

You have 3 female pink convicts, the smaller ones being the short body variety. These are often called (incorrectly) jellybean parrots.

Just wanted to thank you so much for this post!! I had been sold a pair of "PINK SEVERUMS" months ago but I have not been able to find any information on Pink Severums - and now I know why! They are, in fact, Pink Convicts!!!

I am flabbergasted! All this time thinking I owned a pair of unusual Severums! :hyper:

Oh well, it doesn't make me love them any less than I do - I bought them because they were beautiful fish, not because I particularly wanted Severums. So, I'm now the proud owner of a pair of Pink Convicts - and I wouldn't have known this if it hadn't been for your post with the pics!

Thanks  - Athena

there in a 180 litre.I didn't think they were gold severums but he persisted they were so thought I would buy them and see how they turn out since gold severums are white when they are that size and it's kinda hard to tell when they are an inch in size lol,oh well looks like they will be getting returned before they start breeding with the larger one.thanks everybody

No problem, good to see I helped someone other than myself lol.Just try and not let the convicts breed as they get extremely agressive and will have a load of fry (I counted 70 something when my parents cons bred) and petshops will probs refuse to take them as they are easy to breed..Oh and for future reference on severums, you get gold, green, red and blue severums, you don't wanna end up with more convicts lol.

what do you mean roundish? in the belly or just it's overall shape?

Oh my pair have been breeding every couple of weeks but the fry don't survive because the male always ends up eating them by the end of the week! I did think about removing the fry to a separate tank but, like you say, it's not always easy to rehome a whole batch of fish (esp if the LFS doesn't have room for them).

They do dominate the tank, though. Like you say, they get overly protective of the eggs and newly hatched fry. For this reason the only other two fish in the tank with them now are my female Betta and a rainbow shark. They seem to know spawning time for the Convicts and steer clear of that end of the tank. Bit ironic really that after all the efforts of keeping other fish from eating the fry, that the male ends up scoffing them all himself anyway! I always end up feeling sorry for the female as she sees her batch of fry diminishing day by day and looks quite sad and lost (especially when the last of the fry disappears).

So you're not keeping your pink convicts then? Aww, shame, they are lovely fish (but not in a well-stocked community tank) and have great personalities. I guess you have your heart set on Severums?

Yeah I love severums, shame cause I was hoping for a partner for my gold sev as shes been alone ever since I got.Put my parents gold sev in my tan k once but only because he was dying and wanted to see if new water would do any good but sadly it didn't, shame cause my gold sev was so happy and following the other about all day.Had a green sev aswell but had to rehome because she kept beating up goldy.I have few fish in my tank who like the peace and quiet so I don't think convict breeding would be very good for them.somebody already killed 1 one of my baby black ghosts and bit the tail off the other but luckily it survived.I think I may actually have 1 gold baby sev, the other 2 keep chasing the other baby away but it's more of a peachy colour now unlike the other 2 who are more white, may get lucky after all :) saying that my tank is totally infested with whitespot somehow and my large gold severum isn't liking it and isn't eating, she's also breathing pretty fast.Think I may have caught it to late :(

Oh no! Hopefully if you start treating asap with Protozin or whatever, you might be able to prevent any fish deaths. I hope so.

Also, where you were saying you didn't want to upset the peace in your tank by the Convicts spawning - I think you'll find that Severums and Convicts have very similar breeding pattern/behaviour. They will become very territorial at spawning time, and continually chase any other fish away from their side of the tank. I found that all out when doing research on Severums and was also warned by the LFS of this (remember, they sold me the fish as Severums). Actually I think a lot of cichlids behave in much the same manner, from what I've read up on. So, if you're intending on having a pair of severums be prepared for some tank wars when they start spawning LOL  . Might be best to leave Goldie on his own, perhaps..

Anyway, all the best with tackling the white spot!

Yeah most cichlids do act the same when breeding, not doing it so much for the breeding but just to mkae the sev a bit happier. He's a bit on the simple side, he aint very clever, for example: one time he went in a semi circle root type thing and tried for about 5 mins to get out a gap that he could not possibly fit in,eventually after a lot of thought he decided to go back out the way he came in lol.
Yeah about the whitespot, it's my severum and 2 clown loaches that have it badly, I put the interpet whitespot treatment in monday and it hasn't to go back in again for another 4 days so thursday I think, not to sure, thing is I usually catch it before it gets to bad but this time I missed it cause I was away for the weekend.I never thought anything of it as I have not had any diseases for about a year and then last week my eartheater got fungus on a wound and then 5 days later I got whitespot.Just shows you can never be to confident lol.

... and clown loaches are notorious for getting whitespot (I've lost a few to it myself). You might get lucky and be able to save the Severum but those delicate clowns seem to go downhill pretty fast once whitespot gets a grip of them. You'll notice they stop swimming around and find something to drape themselves over (e.g. top of filter or thermometer etc), only moving to attempt at eating but then eventually that is even too much effort for the poor things.

The ups and downs of fishkeeping, eh?
