I was in my garage today when I noticed my old baby BiOrb. I couln't help thinking to myself that it could potentially make an interesting planted setup. So I have this idea of perhaps transforming it into just that, but I'm not sure if it would work.

Firstly, I'd have to scrap as much as possible of the UGF to allow for a different substrate, which would leave the tank filterless. Would this be ok? HOB filters would be pretty much impossible to fit and it would be tricky to find a small enough internal filter and then only have the difficulty of affixing it to the side of the tank.

Secondly would be the lighting. Its only a 5W halogen light, would I be able to grow anything using it? I had the idea to use ferts and liquid CO2 (no way of attatching pressurised CO2) to help. I was thinking of a small piece of bogwood/driftwood, planted with java fern and java moss, possibly with some taller background plants and potentially a carpet plant. Would the java fern/moss grow under the conditions and are there any plants that may be suitable for the back of the tank/carpet?

I'm not entirely sure on substrate yet, though ideally I wouldn't want gravel. I would want something that is known to be of good quality, so any recommendations are welcome.

I had the idea to add a couple of shrimp to the tank if all went to plan and whatever plant life I had in there was successful, as I couldn't think of any fish that would survive in there due to the small volume and with it being filterless. What are your thoughts on this? Would a couple of male endlers do alright or is it too small-a volume for them, too? I would try to have the tank fairly heavily planted, hoping that the plants would absorb the ammonia etc and do waterchanges weekly. Would this work?

I have no idea if I'll ever actually be able to carry out this little idea, but I would like to give it a go sometime. Would it work?

Thanks for reading
