Three of my amazon swords have all decided to start thowing off plantlet stalks (similar to household spider plant) at around the same time. The question I have is quite simple really - how and when do I remove them for replanting. The stalks have smaller plants along their length. Can I cut off the stalk, cut away the excess from the base of the baby plants and replant or do I need to wait until they are a certain size - will they start to produce roots?
One of the stalks (on a paniculatus) has a plant with several 2-3" leaves about 3" for the parent plant with smaller, newer plantlets further along the stem and another (an osiris) seems to have several baby plants all together (at the water surface and growing emerged). If I remove the stalk to get the biggest baby, will the others (2 -3 1" leaves) be developed enough to replant/survive?

Sorry for what might be a silly question but I would like to keep as many plantlets for friends etc as possible.

Whilst I thing about it - could the osiris survive out of water as a regular houseplant (seeing as how it's currently growing "in air") or does it still need to be partially submerged?

When the plantlet grows roots you and cut the extra stalk with a pair of scissers. i like to added root tabs to the baby plantlet to give it a boost in growth.

As Alex says when the plantlet grows roots you can plant them. Swords are as much terrestrial plants as aquatic ones, when we buy them they have been grown above the water, which is why the submersed growth is different. I grew some in damp pots in a shady part of the garden through the summer. If you can give them enough moisture light and consistent warmth they will grow in the air.

One on my amazon swords have recently given of a baby plant,i just gently removed it and replanted it.

try weighing down the stem and the plantlets might then root by themselves and still benefit from being attached to the mother plant, then you can cut the ties when they have rooted
