One of my platties has had fry, I've managed to get 3 into a breeding net, How long do they have to stay in this, and will they change colour or stay yellow.
My Platy just had a baby too! I think there are more to come - i just noticed this tiny wee orange fish in the corner of my eye yesterday! its hiding under some rocks - i've ordered a breeding net and some baby food straight away so hopefully it will be okay till i get the net.
I used to have a platty myself and it gave birth also, the colour will darken and you should keep them in the net for... about a week, maybe 2, or just wait till they are bigger and you are sure they are not small enough to get eaten. It will take time though...
I have found with my platy fry that a breeding net is a great starting point but a small rearing tank (nothing flash needed) is much better. I have angels and gouramis and both of these try to get at the fry which they can see through the net. They have succeeded in killing a few that got too close to the bottom by attacking them through the net, they then try to eat them through the net causing considerable stress to the other fry.
If you cannot get another tank then make sure that you regularly clean out the breeding trap as the food will accumulate in there and they end up foraging amongst gone-off, stale food. Turkey basters are great for moving them out but you have got to be gentle if you use these.
Judge how long you keep them by the mouth size of the other occupants in the tank as mentioned before.
