Hey all:

Woke up this morning to find babies in the tank and did the mad dash to get them into my baby tank. They look exactly like guppy fry but I have only male guppies no females. They are in the tank with mollies but when I have molly fry they usually have color to them these dont. Can guppys and mollies cross breed? Other than that hypothesis I have no idea where they came from. Any advice would be great.

Thanks

yes they can :hyper: they look absolutly amazing to. i hope thats what happened in this case. enjoy your new fry

I've never kept mollies or guppies, but with swordtail and platy fry they aren't coloured always, they are either a cross or mollie fry. I ges you will find out as the develop.
Would love to see some pictures when they're older, hope you managed to catch quite a few. :)

Mollies and guppies can crossbreed, however, it's highly unlikely. They will mate with their own kind first if given the opportunity. Probably just Molly fry...what kind of Mollies are they? Not all are born with color.

Here's another way out guess...maybe not all of your guppies are males as you thought. I have one guppy who looks EXACTLY like a female aside from the tell-tale gonopodium. I'd say the odds of your guppies not all being male are higher than a guppy x molly cross.

Molly fry do not look like guppy fry at all. Instead of being a pinhead with a tail, they look more like miniature fish. (That is the best I can do at describing the difference)
These are newborn molly fry, less than 12 hours old, with their mother.

I have seen some instances where newborn mollies were as transparent as guppy fry but I agree that most often they are born with some color. Even in that picture all of the fry have some color although they do not all match the parent.

Love seeing fry they're so cute, and that is such a nice molly :)
