hi. i am new. i was wondering if anyone could think up a cichlid that is semi aggressive, somewhat hardy, will guard babies & eggs, and isn't too hard on the eyes. tnx

i heard that convicts are one of the MOST agressive and i need a fish not too aggressive because i have angels

ok well u should have said that befor. first off your now looking at american cichlids only as africans require a ph between 8 and 8.3 depending on which lake ur focusing on.

for american cichlids i would possibly got wih either more angels, rams or some smalled versians. you could also go stuff like congo tetra's, rainbow sharks and as my cousin has done archer fish. a ghost knife is always a good edition to any neutral tank

i'm thinking about just putting an oscar in there they are beautiful sorry i really am not familiar with what is american and african

An Oscar is a definate no i'm afraid - a single Oscar needs at least a 75 gallon tank, these guys get huge and grow really quickly.

well you kinda blew it lol. an electric yellow is an african cichlid and if you refer to my previous post they do best in a 8 to 8.3.

i duno how long one would survive in a neutral or lower tank but i daresay it wouldnt be healthy for it. i would if i were you take the electric yellow or the angels back then go from there. if u keep the angels u can get things like rams etc which look beautiful and gouramis etc. if you keep the yellow then when u take the angels back by a water buffer which will bring your ph to 8.3 and also buy about 6 or 7 more yellows because they do best in groups as a community fish who seem to do quit well when there is a heirachy as ive noticed with having one who has grown very large and seems to defend the others who arent as big and strong

well id rather not. he is eating his head off, and treating the other fish with very good care. nothing fishy seems to be going on...

You may not want to, but it is alot better for the fish. They need ALOT of rockwork, i mean, the lake they live in is bascially Sltae rocks and river rocks ALL over the place. They dont feel secure without rockwork. Also, they need familys. It's like you were with your faily one day, and someone picked you up, put you in a bag, drop you in a tank/city, and you were the only person. But, ofcourse, you had pets ect. but nothing beats a real person. The lab also grows to a good size. What size is the tank?

again u dont have the right water chemistry and either he dies or u bump ur ph up to 8.3 which will kill the other neutral fish in ur tank. up to u but also refer to kribs post bout rockwork and needing a shoal of them
