Hi
Am looking for an aquarium for my 16 yr old daughter never kept fish before quite like the look of this one.
As it has an under gravel filter does this mean i cannot use sand? advice please
It holds 18 ltrs how many fish could she have max(not to start with)
Any views on this piece of kit, alternatives and general advice welcome
many thanks

Nice choice of starter tank! :)
Yes, and undergravel filter will not be able to have sand on top.
A fish choice would most likely be a betta only, thats a nice size for a male betta. Some companions could be shrimp and maybe snails too, but please research cycling a tank before adding any fish to the tank, if you need any more help just ask.

If you dont know what a betta is then look at my siggy \/ There lovely dont ya think?

EDIT: that tank has no lid, bettas can Jump, so make sure the waterline is about an inch or 2 lower than the rim of the tank, or get/make a cover. Betta come up to the waterline to breathe so make sure there is some distance between the waterline and a lid :)

Hi and welcome :good: under gravel filters wouldnt work with sand as the sand gets too compact and wouldnt let the flow through you would need quite loose gravel to let it circulate properly. 18 ltrs isnt the biggest tank so you are restricted as to what you can keep in it, maybe a single male fighter (betta) and a couple of shrimp, or maybe just an invertabrate tank and a few snails, or a small species of fish like galaxy rasboras or some kind of minnow might be ok. the general rule for fish stocking is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water so 18 ltrs is roughly 4 gallons but if you go for really small fish like galaxy rasboras you could possibly get away with a bit more as they dont have a massive bio load so i would say maybe 6/7 of these may be ok.....
dont forget to cycle the tank first though, there is a pinned topic on here showing fish in and fishless cycles. fish in is alot more work but you get fish straight away, if you dont do it correctly then the fish may become ill or even die. fishless takes time to complete maybe 5/6 weeks but is more fish friendly and easier to do and fish will thank you for it.

Welcome to the forum Pib. I am afraid that only a betta lover would appreciate that tank. It is far too small for most fish stockings to work out well. Many single fish would be too big for the space available, much less a nice grouping. I find that a 10 gallon, 38 litres, tank is about the minimum for many fish to be comfortable. At that size, you will have far more stock choices as long as you stay with small fish like guppies, rasboras, neons or platies. A larger tank also makes a better choice in terms of stability. Many small tanks can become hard to manage for a newcomer because any minor change can upset the balance in it. A larger tank is far more forgiving.
You were correct to question the ability to use sand with a UGF. Sand and a modern undergravel filter just do not mix.
As Betta_246 suggested, you should research the fishless cycle before starting to stock any tank. There is a link in my signature area to threads on both fish-in and fishless cycling.
