Aww...no Dwarve Chain Loaches For Me

No dwarf chain loaches for me.

My LFS tried to order some and he told me he got laughed at by his supplier because his supplier has been trying for months and they're extremely hard to find at the moment. I guess most are wild caught and the species is now threatened. I told him not to worry about it. Let the fishies stay wild and free!!

So I won't have loaches after all in my 37. This is what I have now waiting to be added into the tank:

2 female bettas
2 peppered cory
6 guppies
2 platies
1 albino BN

I want to add:

3-4 peppered cory
5-6 Bandit/panda/skunk (?)
1 female betta


Yay? Nay? My LFS has all the 3 of the mentioned cories at the moment. I love them ALL. The pandas he said are going to be a little less hardy. So despite their itybity ness and such I am leaning towards Bandit or Skunk. Do I have enough room for 5 peppered, 5 bandit, and maybe 5 pandas? Or should I keep to two species and save myself room for baby guppies whom are sure to be born and take over.

how big is the tank? yopu need atleast 1 more female betta because if theres only 2 1 will ully the other so you need a group to spread agression. and you will need atleast 2 more peppered corys because they like to be kept in groups of 4+

37 gallons. Yep. I know they want more friends. That is why I have under what I want 3-4 more peppered cory or so. And also I am getting another female betta. Probably a crowntail as I've never had one before.

I've read that it is best to keep groups of female Bettas in 5s or 6s, so that the dominance of the alpha female is spread through the soriety

Edit: Shame about the Dwarf Chain Loaches. Fairoak Maidenhead Aquatics (one of my LFS) did have a tank of them when I last went ~two weeks ago.

5 female bettas
4 peppered cory

4 panda

Believe it or not my 2 get along great. I'm working my way up in numbers. Wasn't sure how adding a 2nd would turn out. When they first saw each other they flared, but other than a few circles around each other that one time they got bored. There is enough commotion with the guppies and platies that they just ignore one another, but trust me. My bf and I are keeping a close eye. So far though they simply just don't care. They're more curious as to why the guppies are always swimming as if food is on its way.

Hm. May not add all 3 other cories mentioned. I want to leave a little room for when my guppies have offspring. As they have already had one, but not sure if he survived. A betta might have eaten it.

I'm really debating though.

I definitely want the bandits...and definitely have to get more peppered.
I might just get the skunks though since pandas are more sensitive. D: Hard decisions.

i dout you will get any guppy fry unless your tank is really heavely planted the bettas or other guppies will eat them.you could easily fit in all the corys but its up to you. i havent had a problem with my panda never lost any never had any gett ill IME they have been hardier than my peppers.

I saw the dwarves being sold on aquabid, but to be honest I don't know if I want to spend the money on them now. I have now become very fascinated with the cories.


I'm aware I may never have any guppies. My bettas are going to keep the numbers in control. It may be a good thing. I am going to have a heavily planted tank so the lucky one here and there may survive, but I kind of do hope that the bettas control the population a little.


Looks like I might be getting some cories!!! And lots of them!

If you like the corys then you would love the dwarf chains even more. Mine have such character and are far more active than my corys.
