Hi all,

I have an automatic fish feeder for my large tank, and it works just great for that when I'm away, the lowest setting is perfect to dish out the desired amount for the entire tank while I'm away.

However, I have another tank with just one Powder Blue cichlid, which I would also like to feed using an automatic feeder, but I find the feeder throws off too much food for just one fish.

Does anybody know of a brand of automatic fish feeder that will give just two or three pellets on the lowest setting?

I find even on the lowest settings, these feeder give off an awful lot of food! I can't imagine ever using any of the higher settings?

I'm not sure regarding brands but there are automatic feeders available where you fill individual compartments in advance and each day it will empty one compartment into the tank, so obviously you'd just put a little amount in each compartment.

Personally I wouldnt use auto feeders, ive read plenty of horror stories in the past where feeders have malfunctioned and dumped lots of food in the tank, which obviously isnt a good thing if you are away on holiday and not able to clean the tank etc.

Most fish will live perfecly fine without food for 14-21 days, if you are going away on a short break then you'd probably be better not feeding rather than relying on an auto feeder.

Try some live food which won't die for a while, them feeding tablets, half it or something, or don't feed it while your out, it will be ok

My automatic fish feeder is called Friendly Neighbour. I dish out servings beforehand in the compartments of one of those pharmacy pill boxes and he is under strict intstructions not to feed more often than every 3 days. For a fish like your cichlid I'd probably just leave him for a week or even a fortnight; I keep a lot of small fish with high metabolisms, so I do think it's worth getting them fed.

Thanks for the replies (Sorry it took so long!)

I think I might look out for those individual compartment feeders then, that seems to be the best solution!

Or leaving it unfed until I return home....
