Attacked by a website visitor

On my website some lunatic left a message in my guestbook. Fortunately, I can check the message first before it can be shown to the public. This person said that the whole website was a hoax. For there aren't any other livebearers than just guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails. If it was true, he would've known about it. For he called himself a livebearer specialist. He wrote that after 5 years of experience, he knew it all. According to this person I should stop working on my website and stop putting rubbish on the internet.
I deleted his message.
Well, I have to admit that he's not lacking self-confidence...

And the above is why I prefer to read the science than the internet crap out there.
But here are the two things I have learned about how to behave online:

you shouldn't let things like this upset you. After all, you are a mod on this site and should be used to dealing with troublemakers and trolls.

Oh, I'm not upset. In a way, I also think it's funny. For he doesn't realize with such a remark that he's fooling himself.

But some of them just don't realize that they're idiots or trolls... Which makes it funny in a way...

WOW! I haven't had a feedback/guestbook form on my sites in what must be 15 years although my animated GIF gallery still shows links that will take forever to totally remove. Even on my public photo gallery I don't allow comments. To me such things are more trouble than they are worth although, when it was active, the feedback on my GIF gallery was related in a way to my ending up with 5 awards from Microsoft.

I am also happy to say that I have not had a successful spam-bot registration in several years on my computer help forums since I wrote my own rather obscure CAPTCHA routine.

Trolls can be a total pain. The worst I've ever seen was a 'person' that used the handle 'boater dave'.

It's a game - he knows you know a lot about livebearers, so he writes something outrageous because he wants to see you try to reason with him. When I was a teacher, I had a few 14 year olds who played that game to perfection, and who explained the rules. If you can get someone who has seriously studied something to respond to your stupid looking post, then you 'are' smarter than him or her. Your friends will love it. You will win.
This was before COVID, but their easiest game was to get medical people to respond to anti-vaxxer propaganda. They weren't anti-vaxxers, but they loved the reaction. The best "hit" was a person who thought he or she could reason with you, and who would try to engage you in respectful conversation.
They were no longer into that when they talked about it, but I'm sure if their lives went wrong in the future, they would have dragged the old skills out.

From conversation, trolls are the main reason so many of the people who could give science based answers to a lot of questions asked here won't go near internet discussion groups. Trolls are like clouds of mosquitoes - you get sick of the bug spray and stay inside. They hurt us all that way, but they have fun.

But all kidding aside , what gets into somebody’s head to be a jerk like that ? Especially to someone you have never met and never will. Does a person get his jollies being a jerk with the anonymity of the internet to hide behind ? And if you respond and call him on his bull he’ll just get all the more belligerent. Stuff like that gets you knocked on your keister in person. I’d like to hear somebody say stuff like that in a biker bar.
