Hi all,

As I am a completely new to fish keeping I thought it would help to keep a diary so I can put all the information in one place which I can reference when I need help!

I initially wanted to get a marine tank and therefore most of my research has been aimed in this direction however I just cannot justify spending that much money when I am so new to this hobby. I have just bought a Fluval Osaka 155, more information can be found here, I was advised bigger is better and this is the largest tank I have space for (without rearranging furniture). It also appears to lend itself for conversion to marine if I decide later down the line if I am ready for a reef tank :D

The tank is second hand (from eBay) but I have been told is in excellent condition, I am due to pick it up this weekend, what should I do to make sure the tank is clean incase there was any ill fish in the tank previously? I am unsure what filter media if any will be in the filter (Fluval 205 Canister) or even if it is worth trying to reuse any as the tank has been empty for at least a week, what would be the best media to use in this kind of setup? I have researched the fish-less cycle and am happy with this procedure, it will also give me useful time to research what fish to keep in the tank, I am more interested in the smaller fish species and prefer those with a bit more colour in them, any suggestions would be welcome. One thing I really liked in the marine tanks were the shrimps is there anything similar for freshwater tanks, I have seen a lobster in my LFS but am wary of their size must have been approx. 4" and I assume still had some growing.

Any help or advise from experienced fish keepers is most welcome, I live in Scotland so the water will be soft I assume this will mean a lower PH (I need to research PH and KH a bit more), I am going to hit the books now to research what fish are best for my tank.

Thanks
