Has anybody tried putting any artificial grass on the base of their tank? Local builders merchant sells it in various colours and I thought a small section would look cool alongside my black sand?

You know, I've never seen anyone do that and I wouldn't even know if it was safe or not. However, Am fairly sure its quite sharp and fish could poke there eyes out on it!

I was thinking more that the fish may try and eat it or it might breakdown and release chemicals? But I do think it would be a cool addition to a tank, because you can get loads of different textures and colours . More research required I think !!

I was wondering about this myself recently.  I have some samples which I was send and would be great for spawning some species.  The pieces I have are soft and I can't see it damaging the fish, releasing chemicals I wouldn't be so sure of but it is washable.

My local LFS does it.
I was in my LFS today and noticed they do not use the fake grass anymore. They told me it was impossible to clean, they'd had problems with dirt collecting underneath it and eventually diseases.

I'd be concerned with the materials the astroturf is made out of leaching into the tank. That's some nasty plastic.
