I just recently bought an Asian Upside down catfish.. They told me where I bought it that it would grow to 3 inches but I think they confused it with a different kind of catfish, the lighter ones with spots. Mine is black with slightly lighter blotches. I have no knowledge of fish.. This is my first one that's not just a gold fish. I have him in a one gallon tank and now that I know he'll grow to much bigger I know this is not good. Please help me! How can I be sure he is the other kind and not asian? Am I killing him by keeping him in a small tank? I'll appreciate any advice. Thanks so much!

You can search for upside down catfish on planetcatfish.com. It has pictures of most species in the hobby.

As for the 1 gallon tank, that depends on the water quality. If you used mature filter media on it, then in the short term (few days to few weeks at the outside) and monitor water quality, you're not killing him. If its uncycled, unfiltered, or will be a longer term home than that, most likely yes.
