I have set up a tank with just argos play sand, 1 piece of bogwood and a piece of mopani wood. thats it in the tank except fish and filters etc.
my pH has risen from 7.4 up to 8.0! i tested the water the night before adding the fish and it was 7.4, the day after adding the fish its 8.0. has the sand upped my pH?
anyone else had a problem like this before using this sand?

Have you tested your tap water?

Seems strange as the woods usually lower the ph

Is it a new uncycled tank? 'Cos ammonia build up will raise the pH.

i've had the same issue atm, everything has spiked so am in wars with my tank, but it isnt the sand, it was ok before with the sand in, its since i moved the tank, i have a spike of ammonia, nitrite, and more thsn likely, PH.

has anything else spiked on your tank?

Hi Ellena, it is a new set up but im running a big sponge filter that has been cycled in 1 of my other tanks for a month and was cycled in a tank at a friends before he gave me it for a year..... i have also placed a large sponge from a donor thats been in her tank for 4 years!! it was full of gunk so i washed it in tank water a gave it a squeeze to clean it a bit, this is just sat on the sand in the tank to help the sponge filter a bit. also running is an aquaone 750 advanced external thats not cycled but im hoping after a month or so it will be seeded from the sponge filter and sponge.
my ammonia levels are at 0 using an API liquid test kit.

Well then I'm out of suggestions :S
yeah me too, a bit strange...... :-( :S

heres a pic of the tank to show how little is in it....... the fish are in there just got camera shy!!!!!!!!!!
