Since im making big changes to my tank i thought now would be a good time to add a 1cm or so layer of sand to make it a little better for corys which i plan to keep in the future...

Ive read a lot about argos play sand being ideal, true?

Since its only 1cm on top of gravel i dont have to worry about anything being stored in the sand which is toxic or whatever, right?

And whats the best way of washing it?

Yes, its good stuff.

To clean it, put some into a bucket (in the bath or outside), and slowly run water into the bucket until it overflows. Stir the sand round (keep the water running) and all the dirt will overflow the bucket. Continue until the water overflowing the bucket is clean.

Pour out water and add sand to tank.

Repeat as necessary.

Good luck. :good:

Thanks backtotropical. Since you seem quite knowledgeable could you check my other thread about stocking please?

Cheers

Actually, is it worth considering just going for all sand instead of sand on top of gravel?

What are the dangers of stuff being trapped or something?

Argos sand is very good.

i microwaved mine to kill any bacteria in it.

BTW if you put sand on top of gravel it will slowly sink down untill it mixes in

All sand is actually easier to maintain. All the detritus just sits on top of the sand making it much easier to remove than if it had sunk into gravel.

The only thing with sand is the well known 'substrate gas pockets' although these are much less dangerous than people think. See the link below for a full explanation.

I'd go with all sand, if I were you. The corys will love it.

Cheers :good:

Thanks.

If you seen my threads, my fish-in cycle has got to me. Im rehoming my fish, and rescaping and starting a fish in cycle (going to try and maintain what bacteria i already have)

So i figured now would be a good time to change my substrate
