We recently got 2 green barbs to go with the 2 regular tiger barbs.
The tiger barbs are in the quarantine tank, and that's right where the greens went as well.
Everything was fine until yesterday.
One of the greens started to float at the top of the tank. Kept going belly up and couldn't keep itself upright. I scooped it out and put it into clean dechlorinated water, but it died shortly after.
So off we went back to the petstore to return it. We got our money back and went to another to try out their fish since the ones we got from it before have all been doing well.
We got a single green barb to replace the dead one. Brought it home, floated it, stuck it in the tank, and a few hours later... it was floating at the top belly up. It was struggling to live but it eventually died.
BUT that's not the end of it... while this one was struggling to live, the other green barb started to do the whole floating at the top thing as well!
So I took it out, put it into some clean water... but it kept getting worse. So not knowing what to do, I eventually just put it back into the quarantine tank.
Things weren't looking very good, but this one seems to have started to get some of it's str back. It's not floating any longer and is swimming a bit stronger.. but still looks VERY weak like it could get worse in a flash.
What on earth is going on? The 2 regular tiger barbs are just fine. They think they own the tank and pcik on the new addition a little bit at first to show them who is boss, but after a short time of that, they stop. The ones that have died have no nipped fins, no wounds, nothing.
No the tank isn't cycled, I do daily 50% water changes to the tank to keep ammonia down. I did a test on the water and the ammonia is at about 0.25-0.50. Would it hurt the fish any if I put some Ammolock kind of stuff right into the tank? Or should I just put that stuff in the replacement water during water changes.
Quarantine tank is only 3-4 gallons, but figured since it's only a temp tank it would be ok to use. It's heated (82F).. and filtered and has an airstone.
We've used this tank before for our guppies and they're all perfectly healthy. Are barbs just not as hardy? The ones we've been gettng have been the smallest of the bunch (largest we got was only about an inch long) b/c the tigers we have are very tiny and we wanted them to kinda grow big with eachother in the main tank.... if that makes any sense lol.
And blahblahblah.... enough with my essay.... any idea what could be going wrong? I haven't done anything different. No air fresheners or anything of the sort has been sprayed near the aquarium... nada.
