Firstly hey guys :) New here and to fishkeeping, great site!!

I want to do a fishless cycle on my new fluval roma 125, bought a fluval 205 external filter for it yesterday :hyper: but I'm having real trouble finding ammonia to buy, all the chemists (including boots) and local hardware stores all said they used to sell it but can no longer get hold of it! Is there an alternative I can use or a place I can buy it from over the net? I found this anyone know if it's the correct stuff? I just wanna get hold of some so I can get going with my cycling!

Thanks alot :)

i havent a clue about the ammonia in the link m8 you would need 2 read the ingriediants 2 see if it contains any suffocants perfumes anythink else added basically :) ammonia i use comes from home base it only about £2 and it comes in a white bottle with blue writting i think most ppl on here either use this 1 or the 1 from boots so if u have a homehouse near by give them a try was in the local 1 by me and they still stock it so they still should stock it in most of there stores

hi & welcome 2 the forum btw :)

Brilliant, ordered that as I was having trouble sourcing it around here :) I will double check what it contains before using it ofc! Did a filter squeeze from a friends mature tank yesterday so just waiting on ammonia to turn up now!

Also, how do I convert mg/l into ppm?

Cheers and thanks for the welcome!

In our hobby mg/l is usually the more correct term but ppm is more widely used. mg/l is used with dissimilar states of matter, usually a solid dissolved in a liquid in our case (solid in mg, liquid in litres etc.) whereas ppm (parts per million) is technically meant for a comparison of substances in a similar state (solid in a solid etc.) So if you had a million ping-pong balls, mostly green, but with 2 red ones in there somewhere, you'd have 2ppm of red ping-pong balls.

When the "parts per" are very small, as in virtually all our situations, then there is virtually no difference in saying ppm instead of mg/l and so we mostly go with ppm and everyone usually gets along with that just fine. So you can consider them, in a practical sense, to just be interchangeable designations here in the beginner's section I'd say.
