i bought some new cichlids yesterday, a breeding pair! hurrah

my parrots hate them and are jaw locking with them, is this just cos they are new?? will it settle down when they settle in and get used to each other???

helppppppppppp

(new cichlids are very much like blue acaras....but are grey with yellow fins Aequidens rondoni)

If the parrots were in there before then they have already set-up their territories which divides the tank up. The new fish have nowhere else to be except in the parrots territories so fighting insues....

bout the best thing to try is take all of the cichlids out into different buckets, move the tank decor around, and do a water change. Then put the fish back in and it will seem like a whole new world to them with different water and everything. They will still quarrel a little, and depending how big your tank is, they all should set-up their own teritories and life should be alot more peaceful. If this doesn't work, then either the new guys or the parrots are gonna have to go as if they can't set-up territories and live semi-peacefully then you will only cutting some fish's life short....

btw, what is the size of your tank and stocking?

It is best to take the fish out but it could very well work without taking them out and just rearranging their territory. That has worked for me in the past. They feel it isn't theirs anymore once you've moved their stuff around, and have to claim it all over again. Fish are pretty intelligent creatures, but they're not too bright when it comes to decorating.

Moving things around in the tank might help..

So they can all establish their own territories.. but sometimes things don't stop and you'll end up with dead fish, so keep an eye on things.
