:grr: how do you buy a pet without even knowing what it eats. I would think that would be basic. If you don't know what it eats, do you know what it needs to live besides water? I can't believe the amount of posts in the forum who ask what their pet eats. Boggles my mind :dunno:

If anyone's gonna buy a fish, I have two things they should do before they buy it, reasearch........and, o dang what was the other.....o Yhea, research.

I can sort of understand this from people who are very new to tanks and what not, but when a person who has obviously been a member of the forum for a while asks this, well, I just think they'd know enough to find out first. For crying out loud, even if you are new, just look at the containers of food in the fish store and find the one with a picture of the type of fish you have, or close enough to it. If it says cichlid pellet, I'll bet you ten whole dollars it's for cichlids.... ooooohhhh, spooky :S

Yup,

I'll admit I have found myself getting in a hurry to get my new pet home and have made my own mistakes. But jeez, what does eat!

you need to research, its not very hard here, just hit the search button and search, or go into the fish index, most fish are in there.

EDIT: sorry AlexsDaddy, i was typing my post when you posted, didn't see it.

Some people are dumb ;) But before i bought a fish i never thought id be on fish forums talkin to people about fish! so alot of people didnt research before they bought their 1st fish, including me. I knew what the ate tho! and i knew about declor and stuff cuz my dad used to have fish :kana:

if you're gonna buy a dog though, you gotta knw about it, like how long of walk it likes ect..., at least the basics about the fish.

I think you overestimate how much many people know about dogs when they get them. Don't be surprised there are ignorant people in fishkeeping. There are ignorant people in every hobby. The problem is, ignorance in this hobby tends to kill fish, which is arguably far worse than ignorance in say... console games. So you broke your PS/2. Bummer.

You're responsible for a life. You can be callous if you want, but it's still a life. I choose to respect that life and try to get others to do the same, even if it means giving them the answers and using the kid gloves as much as possible.

Daniodude-forget about it. It happens to all of us. B) I just beat you is all :p :D

mwm-I never though I would be addicted to a fish forum either till I got my first betta. Now I am not only addicted to bettas, but tropical fish forums as well!! :fun: I am a devoted member of MTSA/TFFA. I did some research on bettas before I got my first one, but there was still like 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000...... questions that I needed answered by some experinced fishkeepers. I have learned time and time again that experience is the best teacher.

Modernhamlet-that's what I don't get. How can some people go out and buy a bunch of fish and the tank for them in the same day, do no research on it what-so-ever, and then in a couple weeks wonder why all their fish die? Ignorance. How hard is it for those who have computers and internet access (which has to be at least 90% of americans today) to get on line, type in the fish they want to get, and read all that comes up? -"Oh no!!! I have to wiggle my fingers all over this keyboard thing!! I don't know if I can do that! :-( What ever am I to do??! ????" :dunno: I just pitty the poor saps for not doing their research first and wasing their money on fish they don't know how to care for. I can understand impulse buys (I myself have been victim of a few but I knew them) but come on!

I have only been keeping fish for about 6 months, but have learned a billion $$ worth of knowledge just from searching the net, this site and my own personal experience.

 1:00 am???!!!!!! I had better get some sleep. 5 am comes early! Da&* Forum! YOU HAVE TAKEN OVER MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-( :D

Story of my life, friend! In spite of the bad apples, it really is a great hobby isn't it?
Yes it is. I don't regret getting involved in it one bit. ;) Ok, that's it! I'm going to be now!!!!!

I think the problem is that people take for granted what a fish actualy needs. Most first-time fish-keepers who you find having done no research never even had the thought cross their minds that fish need more to survive than just water and some food (though probably not the right type of food...). With dogs, I think it is pretty much general knowledge (the basics) that dogs need walks and food but, again, you need to research for more information. But, as ModernHamlet said, with fish not doing research means the loss of the fish's life while a dog would still survive even if all you knew were the absolute basics.

Well, the problem with people that don't research dogs is they end up getting a dog they can't really take care of in the long run, and then oops, to the shelter with you! It's like, lady, if you're eighty years old, don't get a doberman puppy who needs a lot of walks when you can barely get across the kitchen with your walker :sly:

As to fish, even if they don't get their answers on the internet what ever happened to picking up a book? They do have fish books out there, if I remember correctly :S

OH MY GOD, YOU MEAN PICKING UP A BOOK? READING??? ON PAPER THAT HAS A COVER??? ARE YOU NUTS?!?!?!

Yes, highly insane. Wow, a book, who would have thought?? Even if you are cheap (like me ;) ) I still read the books at the store, or find ones at the library, or the computers at the library when I didn't have this one at my house. People just suck when it comes to thinking for themselves.

And yes, the horror of reading books is often true, had to do a seventh, yes seventh grade book report, most of the boys picked Harold the Farm dog books to do theirs on. :grr: The teachers even let them!!!

I suppose a lot of people still view animals as things for them to own or acquire, that is why they don't feel a lot of responsibility that comes with having one. Heck, even with their own children, some people get pregnant and have babies without knowing anything about child care, without any financial, psychological and emotional preparation, and without even asking themselves if they would make good parents.

I guess people have not learned the habit of thinking of the implications and consequences and how their actions might affect others before doing what they want.
