Hi there

So I'm about to buy my first tropical fish tank, and have settled on a 60 l biorb(mainly because I live in an apartment block with space and weight of the tank being a problem) for my living room.

I have read up on the theory of maintaining an aquarium and am keen to get the process started.

I'm planning on adding the following fish over the next few months

5 x Neon Tetra
5 x X Ray Fish or Myers Hatchet Fish
1 x Male Siamese Fighter
1 x Dwarf Sucker Catfish or 1 x Upside down catfish
1 x Shrimp of some kind

So two questions is this an appropriate collection of fish(my research tells me they are all okay for a community tank) and if they are okay in which order should I add the fish to the tank?

I think the hatchet fish could maybee do with a little more room, do you mean x ray tetras if so I would go with these. I think that could be a great little setup but I wouldnt bother with the catfish (dont really know if it would be lonely). I would add the tetras then the x rays then the shrimp. If these settle together add the fighter but keep a very close eye on it.

be careful with the upsidedown catfish. I saw them in my LFS a while back and wanted to get them but came back first to do some research on them, found out most shops sell them as upsidedown catfish but they are actually.... (forgot the name ) anyways they apparently grow quite big and can be quite nasty!

make sure your tank has gone through its cycle before adding fish!

Bettas don't make great community fish as they can be aggressive and also get nipped at by other fish. They also prefer little water movement so in a community tank this could prove difficult.
Neons are likely to nip at the Bettas fins and the Bettas may end up attacking the shrimp.
In that size tank you would probably be best with:
5 Neon Tetras
5 Hatchet fish
1 Shrimp

Unfortunately, the Biorb tanks are not as easy to stock as a normal tank because there isn't much room at the top or the bottom. You may actually struggle with the Hatchet fish as they are top dwellers.

Why not buy one of the Aquacube tanks?. They'll take up around the same space but, more importantly, any smallish fish you get will have some decent swimming space - which they won't have in a BiOrb. Neons aren't recommended for a newly-cycled tank; they need a cycled AND matured tank.
