Are 'shale Rocks' Safe For Use In Aquarium?

Hi, i've been a member for a while just havent really posted, i've been doing alot of reading and learning and now I am just getting a few things together before I start up my first Aquarium.

I recently purchased some rocks that I liked the look of:

However after checking them over the edges are very 'crumbly' and I can snap pieces of and crush the edges to powder, I have tried soaking them in water for a while and scrubbing off the crumbly parts and although there isnt as much as before there is a continual small amount of powder still coming from the brittle edges.

So I am just wondering firstly is this type of rock aquarium safe and secondly if it is safe will it effect my water chemistry or hardness by leeching minerals and things into the water with it being so crumbly and easy to break apart?

Looks like some weak slate aggregate to me, should be fine to use..

Although, if your getting jagged edges, I would be wary about using it in case fish injure them selves swimming into it...

Stuff like smooth granite pebbles (or any innert rock really) is what your after

Yeah I wouldn't risk it. Especially if you're going to add bottom feeders.
