Are Oscars More Intelligent Than Jds?

Its hard to say really. I haven't kept either, but judging the intelligence of any fish is a task. You may consider an intelligent fish as being active, responding to you, and eating agressively while others may think a fish to be intelligent because it likes to stay secluded and wait until all other fish have left to get food. I think oscars may be a lot more owner obsessed than JDs, and will get very excited when their owner has food, but I'm not sure on which is smarter.

its hard to say as dwarfs pointed out. though, I have a JD and he is very owner oriented eating from my hand, gets excited just to see me. the only other fish that I have that would come as close is my Crenicichla Reticulata. now all of my fish know when it is me feeding them and when I am gone and it is my wife feeding them. she tells me that they all misbehave and there isn't a feeding where she doesn't get soaking wet from them splashing and spitting water at her. though I have never witnessed any of this in my fish and tell her that she is just making it all up to make my fish look bad.

Interacting with people is not really a test of intelligence though. Many intelligent animals are not people friendly at all so its hard to use that as a basis. You would have to do a lot of research on intelligence tests. I think problem solving is involved but I am not sure on the specifics.

Both these fish respond well, but Oscars may appear more intelligent because they are such pigs and food seekers - this can give the illusion of intelligence.

What always gets me is oscars are considered intelligent because they are, as you say, greedy and owner-orientated. Nobody says the same of a 99 p guppy, though they display the same traits and can easily be taught to eat out of your hand. Though I do have my doubts as to their problem-solving abilities.

nobody says that about guppies because they are destened to become food for cichlids. :hyper:   :hyper:
