Hello

I went to LFS today and I just couldn't resist. I don't normally go to this store but was really impressed by how healthy the fish looked there. I saw some lovely blue platys and had to get some. I got 2 females and a male but I think the females may already be pregnant. One of them especially.

They also had some gorgeous High fin platys and I couldn't resist them either I got 3 females and a male. They had a 7 for 6 offer on all of their fish!!! It does make me wonder how many people are dramatically overstocking their tanks on that deal. Luckily I have loads of room and prepared to do waterchanges every other day for a few weeks whilst my filter mini-cycles.

Anyway, what do you think of my blues. Pics are not great i'm afraid as they are a bit lively but check them out.

This is the most likely: -

And this is the other female blue that I also have suspicions about!

Do you think they are preggers??

Here is also a picture of some of my new high fins settling in with my other fish.

I'm very sad. Just checked on my fish before lights out and it looks like my original red wag male has been attaked. His tail and top fin are shredded. Poor little thing. They were all excited about the algae wafers earlier and started fighting.

Will it grow back?? :(

With clean water and time the fins will grow back. Your females all appear to be in the earliest stages of pregnancy. Nice buy, they are all lovely.

My platy finally had her babies.
Here are some pics of them.
about 70..
took about 6 hours. she is gonna pop again one of these days.

Beautiful fry. Thank you for sharing pics. I'm so excited about my mums to be.

My male is trying to mate with my orange high fin. They could be interesting fry!

Hey guys. Just to let you know that none of my platys have had any babies. They haven't got any bigger either. I don't know, I was so sure at least 2 were preggers!! They must just be fat. The males are also not interested in the females at all. Celebate platys.....who ever thought!!

Good observation there 48. I have never seen a platy that wasn't pregnant unless it had just delivered. I have also never seen many fry in a community tank no matter how many were produced unless I took steps to give them adequate cover for the community they were in.

I agree that the 2 blues pictured above could have had their babies and they have been eaten. However since then they and the others in the tank have showed absolutely no signs of being pregnant. They are not plump and not changing in shape at all. I'm wondering if they are still quite young. Maybe they just haven't settled into the tank yet after 5-6 weeks. I don't know. I'm sure something will change soon!!

if they have just had babies then more should be on their way in 4-5 weeks time, so it may be worth investing in a breeding trap if you would like lots of fry.
