I just bought two great new platies yesterday and the person that assisted me said that they were pregnant. I looked over the stickied threads at the top to see when they're ready to drop frys, but I want to be 100% sure because I'm extremely worried about stressing them when they're not even ready to drop yet. So I've noticed that their stomach is starting to square off and there is a white bulb near their anus, which I'm told are the two biggest factors in seeing when they're ready to drop. Please tell me if the information given to me is correct and if my platies are ready to go into the breeding box. I just put my red/white platy into the breeding box.

sorry i don't know when they'll drop - i have two that have been 'about to drop' for nearly a week.

need a better side view on the second fish.

First fish is 2 weeks pregnant max i would say.

Thanks for the input everyone!

5teady, here is the side view of the platty that you requested. Also, you said that my first platty is about 2 weeks max, about how many weeks would the platty need to be for her to be ready to drop? Also, here is a pic of my fish tank as well, do you think it has enough cover-up for the frys? I only have those 2 platties in that tank right now.

maybe but i would try to use a breeding net / trap. i let my variatus platy (v. platy for short) give birth in the main tank and only one fry survived. he / she is now in a net soon to be transferred into a little tank. its really annoying because i 'borrowed' lots of fake plants from my sister and snuggled them into one corner to give the fry a a nice section to hide in and they all appeared to ignore it. (i found the survivor on the filter)

Darn, sorry about the frys that didn't make it. I actually didn't notice any frys until I cleaned my main tank and saw them swimming around, so I didn't even know my platties were pregnant! For that reason, that's why I got another 10 gallon tank for these 2 new platties I just bought and the plants in there are all real, so hopefully the frys will be drawn to the plants to feed off them or something.

I would say that both platys are around the 2 week mark, they give birth at around 4-5 weeks.

IMO, none of your fish are very close to a drop. If you give us a few pictures in another week or two, maybe we can do a better job of estimating.
