Are Guppies Suitable For A New Tank Environment?

Hello all!

I've recently setup a new tank environment - unfortunately it has been a "fish in" cycle due to me blindly following the LFS advice prior to doing my own research, which led to the loss of all of the 5 cherry barbs they convinced me to purchase with the new tank as they would "withstand anything".

So now, I have 3 harlequin rasbora's that seem to be doing just fine, and nitrite and ammonia levels never reach above 0.25ppm, and are mostly towards 0.

Question: can I safely purchase a couple/few guppies for the tank? I am not going to be following my LFS' advice anymore, yet people have reccomended them for both their long term contribution to the tank, as well as being pretty hardy.

Many thanks! :good:

When the ammonia and nitrites are never enough to detect, you could try adding one or two guppies, no more. Wait at least a week after that and make sure the chemistry is staying good and you could add one or two more. How big is the tank that you are filling with fish?

The tank size is 48 litres, so around 13-14 US gallons.

This sounds like a plan, I shall be continuing to monitor progress on the cycle.

The most that I would put in a tank that size is about 10 guppies but take it nice and slow getting there.
