Hi i have recently got 2 dwarf gouramis, male and female,

also in my tank i have a red tailed shark, 5 guppys, 4 platies, a louch, and 3 cory catfish, all very placid!!!!

is this two many fish? and i have just heard within the hour that the gouramis are aggressive? is this true?

they get on really well at the moment, been together 2 days now

OS tank (overstocked) way too many fish for that size tank....

Hya - yes if you follow the text book guide lines your tank is over stocked. If you lose the shark, however, you should be able to keep those fish healthy and happy. Some of my tanks have become very overstocked, short term due to breeding etc. I think you just have to be a bit more obsessive with water tests and water changes. E.G. I ended up growing on ca. 200 gouramis in a three foot tank becuase I under estimated how strong the brood was (that is I thought most of them would die). Anyone will scream at the thought of 200 dwarf gouramis in a three foot tank but with 50% daily water changes and five filters working at the same time we managed to rear all of them to adulthood and keep the nitrates etc down!

Oh and I've never had a days trouble with aggression from pairs of dwarf gouramis

apart from your stocking problem, dwarfs behavior and aggression largely depends on the individual, i use to have 2 that would kill each other, compared to others that wouldnt bother even chasing others.

Having 1 male and a 1 female dwarf gourami might make the female's life very miserable, as the male will constantly harrass her. It is advised to keep a 1:2 ratio to spread out the agression, and to give the females a break. Your tank is however too small for a trio. You would need at least 20 gallons to keep a dwarf trio.

[sub]hi :)
i had 3 dwarf gourami's (two males and one female) and they were fine with each other and all the other fish in the tank (inc neon tetra and white cloud mountain minnows) although i did have problems with pearl gourami's.
hope this helps.[/sub]

I have a Dwarf Gourami that is mildly aggressive towards some of the other fish in my tank...mostly the SA cichlids. Usually just puff and flare, and an occasional chase...no nipping or constant harassment yet, but I do keep a close eye out for it.
