2 questions regarding aquarium salt:

1- I've been keeping tropical fish for several years now and have always added aquarium salt when doing water changes. I was tought that this promotes slime coat and generally makes the fish healthier. I read somewhere recently that this is really only necessary when treating disease or keeping a brackish tank. Is a constant low salt content desirable? Is it worth the expense?

2- What kind of salt is aquarium salt? I am setting up a "mascot tank" in the microbiology lab where I work, and we have at least three different lab-quality salts on hand (sodium cloride, magnesium cloride, and calcium cloride). I'd like to be able to use one or a mix of these rather than overpaying for aquarium salt at a pet store. Does anyone know the chemical composition of store-bought aquarium salt?

1) Not needed and detrimental to many freshwater species.

2) Sodium Chloride.

Very brief and to the point but 100% correct Tolak.

BTW, for brackish, you definitely do not want aquarium salt, you want sea salt like they sell for reef tanks.
