I use aquarium salt in my tank also, can this be killing my fish. I posted earlier about my fish not living. Can someone please tell me what fish can I have that need salt, and the fish that I can have that dont need salt. Maybe mixing the 2 is part of my problem. I am so frustrated.
I have 1 plecassumus, 2 tetras, and 1 tiger barb, is all i have left in my 55 gallon tank. I have had mollys tetras, gouramis, platys, neons, ghost knife fish. My heart Dr. told me to get a fish tank to reduce my stress level. It helped for awhile, but now I have had so many problems with it.
I am wondering if I should get a 10 gallon tank for the 4 remaining fish I have and retart my 55 gallon? Any information that anyone can give me on keeping a healty tank with a mixture of what kind of fish would be so helpfule to me.
Melody :-(

I agree with Wilder, the majority of tropical fish don't require salt. As long as you do water changes they will eventually bring the salt level down and hopefully your other fish should be ok. Don't give up just yet!

Thank you for the info. Should I restart my 55 gallon tank? Do none of the tropical semi agressive fish need salt? How often should I clean my tank? How much of a water change should I do?

You could get away with doing a 20-30% water change and try and do it every two or three days for aweek or two. I should imagine that would be enough to help clear the majority of the salt.
Apart from mollies I don't know of any tropical fish that needs salt, but someone else may be able to help you.
I really wouldn't restart your tank just yet in the hope that the water changes do the trick. Test your water stats regularly and do a water change every 1-2 weeks unless one is needed in between this.

Remove the salt with water changes.
A weekly gravel vac and water changes of 25%.
I wouldn't restart your tank could end up finishing them all of with a cycle.
Don't need salt with the fish you have left, shouldn't of really been using it.
Only mollies need brackish water but the fish you kept with them wouldn't of tolerated it.

What kid of a test kit is the best, the 1 with the chemicals and tubes or the strips?

Definitely the one with chemicals, the test strips are't very accurate. You can normally pick up a test kit relatively cheap which contains tests for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and PH.
