1) Deciding on beautiful white sand for the substrate then realisng 2 weeks later just how bad it shows up any dirt/detritus.

2) Realise you want a planted tank and that the planting substrate you prob should have bought should really should be below the 60lbs of white sand so its to late now

3) Order £5 bundle of random plants off ebay plant them where you think then 3 days later notice there all half dead because you didnt feed them any ferts (Now that tank has cycled got nice collection on way from Greenmachine Tropica + and Easy Carbo)

3b) Read planted tank section and realise your shiny £20 air pump hose non return valves & bubble bar will only help kill your plants if you keep em in your tank

4) Do a water change and forget to add the dechlorinator till the end

5) Realise the depth of your precious white sand isn't deep enough for plants order 50lb bag of nice pale brown sand and put about 40lb of it ontop of the white sand.

6) Do a water change and forget to add the dechlorinator till its full (again).

7) When internal filter (bought to coexist with the Fluval 305 external) arrives connect it up at 2am (no I don't know why i waited till then either ) And go to bed forgetting to switch on the external filter. Wake up at 7am in panic and turn it back on (Wasn't disconnected so *should* be ok)

8) Notice your Annubis (sp) ? is looking poorly because your water is so warm to make nice bacs.

On the plus side can't be much more for me to screw up till fish arrive

The plants won't have died cos you didn't feed them, just in bad condition probably

other than that I lol'ed

Awww- dont lose heart - we have all done it! You learn by your mistakes and hopefully we can all pass the information on to stop others going there!! :good:

That or you probably haven't given them enough light etc lol. After shipping you usually should soak them in a bucket straight away and then rinse them under running water than plant them and give em light asap! After all they've been wrapped up in a dark box for some time!

I wouldn't say they're all that bad those mistakes, though I've read some people don't use any dechlorinater at all!

I found out last night the likely reason most of the plants that died (which were all pretty much of 1 type ) hate soft water which living in scotland i have. I've now ordered a set from Java plants that they are tailoring for me to Soft water tolerant plants. The plants that didn't die are doing pretty well.

Ive invested in root tablets tropica nutriton + and easy carbo and with 80w of lighting i should be ok now low tech wise.

Most of my plant related errors came from lack of research I spent considerable time researching tanks, filters, substrates etc but to be honest the idea of have living plants simply never entered my mind at the purchasing stage. This meant subsequently i didn't have a plant substrate and did have a air pump and associated items i actually don't need.

That said i love the look of the 2 sands on top of each other it looks from the side looking in like a slice through a mountain with the different rock layers its quite cool ever if it was the result of adapting to circumstance  And the lack of a plant substrate i can work around with the tablets/ferts.

I am notoriously forgetful tho so I have put sticky note in the cupboard where the hose for filling the tank is reminding me to dechlor as i really really don't want to forget while I have fish in. Same with the the filter mess up no harm done as the 2nd filter was on the whole time but its just a matter of concentrating on the matter in hand and not getting distracted and making daft mistakes lol

I tried Vallisneria in my tank and the water is so soft they just melted in days. :( nearly all the weeds I believe can adapt really really well though so there isn't much worry there!

i live in scotland too, soft water is excellent for south american fish, mine all love the soft water and my plants grow great in it.

cheers

Funny you should say that Joshua Valisneria is the offending and now dead plant

Cheers Scott good to know some things can live in our water

You'd be surprised how many plants can live in 5-8 pH and up to 20 hardness

 theres not enough space in this box to even begin on mine

you have to do it wrong so that you know how to do it right! ( thats my excuse and im sticking to it )

I don't know anything about the PH/hardness relation to my plants. So far I've just been whacking them in, feeding them and hoping for the best!

Haha I guess we're both victim to soft water , it's killed again.

This thread is just crying out for members to add their mishaps don't you think!

Mine?......where to start :shifty: How about happily gravel vaccing and feeling proud of myself in sucking up great piles of poo only to get that soggy socks feeling :X You guessed it, the pipe had slipped out of the container some time earlier and about 5-6 gallons into the Axminster :S
