how long do you have to keep the light on for your fish and can you keep it on 24-7

24/7 is not a good idea aim for around 8-10 hrs a day.

yep, 24/7 would cause algae and keep the fish up - they would get pretty stressed

go for 8-10 hours

Yes 8-10 hours is great timing for light.. It also helps REDUCE the algea. .If you keep the alight on all times it will make algae grow as stated above..
