I am in the process of setting up a new Marine Aquarium.

The problem iv come about is to do with getting my Protein skimmer to fit my tank?
the tank is 48x12x18

The instructions that came with the skimmer is that i should mount it so the line on the skimmer is level with the water but this leaves it some 4 inchs out of the water? which will not allow me to put the hood on.

does anybody have an ideas about how i can get around this? e.g. does the skimmer have to be so high out of the water or can i buy a hood to allow for the extra hight?

Many thanks

If you have a Juwel tank (Like one i have) then you simply cut a hole out of the hood.

Im afraid this is one of the reasons why many reef tanks tend to be open topped (or at least have custom made hoods) Halides and skimmers makes hoods very impractical.

Sorry i could not be of more help.

What type of skimmer and hood do you have?

My advice is get a sump and plumb your skimmer there. Then you hide the heater, pumps, etc in there, with just a spray bar or return outlets in the corners at the top. Quieter too cuz you can sound insulate the cabinet.

The only trouble with adding a drill to this for a sump is that many dont recomend a Juwel tank should be drilled. (Something about the way they make the glass).

Saying that though, i know of many that have taken the risk and rilled their Juwels with no trouble. If a sump can be added to the system then it does solve many many problems as GL says

why do you have to drill to have a sump, cant you just have it HOTB? like a large filterbox sorta?

I use the shuraun (damn cant spell the brand right) overflow. It has a 32mm tank connector and works pretty well.

Some trickery is needed to have it run quiet tho as many people complain of the racket they make.

You can have overflo boxes that will siphon off warer into a sump below but these can be fiddly and also if they fail then you will end up with the entire tank volume over your floor (as the sump certainly cant hold the entire volume of the tank)>
Due to the suction of the overflo this can happen so i never use them. If you use weirs and have the tank driolled then the water ill only fall to the level of the weir. With a bit of work you can make sure the sump will be able to hold the volume of water that would backsiphon if ithe tank power was to fail.

You can of coure use a tank over the main display, however this isnt always practical (under a tank and out of sight within a cabinatre is easier). If its over the main tnak then a simple case gravity would work.. however you would still need to drill a hole or have some device to get the water over the top of the tank and into the main tank below.

I have an overflow box currently. :*)

It is really scarey..

It mucks up, you have water everywhere..

And things get sick and die.. :-(

Sometimes one has no options, but I wish I had realized the true advantage and piece of mind in a drilled tank when I started..

It is the way to go..
