Just like to say i to all members and as a newby would like some advice from any wise owls out their.

I have been trying to locate a AQUAEL AQUARIUM UV AS-11W UV Sterilizer or better still a model that is similar and cheaper in price that will do the same job.

It will need to be an external filter and be the same or better spec.

Many thanks in advance.

Hello,

Google kicked out this one: http://www.onlineaquariumstore.com/acatalog/AquaEl_UV_Sterilizer_AS-11W.html

Have you considered a TMC Vecton?? I use UV sterilisers on all of my tanks, Vecton, JBL and a few no-name brands. I've only bought one new, the rest came secondhand from Ebay. If you do decide to go the secondhand route then expect to do a little remedial work.. At best, you'll need to change the UV tube.

If can afford to wait a few weeks and want to buy new more cheaply, then have a look at the units from China/Hong Kong etc. on Ebay. I'll be seriously looking at these in the near future.

Many thanks Bodge, I bought one from a company called Swell but was ripped off by them, they sell items they dont stock then try and sell you a cheap make one for an inflated price.

Anyway I am looking to buy one for around £60: exteral uv 11w min 250 litre cycle rate. Any one any ideas?
Thanks

Welcome to the forum Smee.
I wish I could help you with your purchase but it is really tough to do from the US.

Hello,

The TMC Vecton V2 300 is available on ebay and other places for £58. This one is 16W. These models have a few advantages over some of the others:
Spares are available. Believe me, you **will** need them at some point in the future! Yes, I have broken bits of them before (but not with the Vecton V1 I've got...)!!
If you have a look at the hose tails in a picture of the unit you will see that they are fixed to the unit by a screwed collar. This makes it easy to disconnect the pipes for cleaning.
The whole unit is self contained, by this I mean that the electronics are built into the unit as opposed to being in a separate lump of plastic. This might be significant if you are tight on space or are a neat freak ;>)

I personally would ignore any manufacturers recommendations as to the maximum tank size that a particular unit can handle. You cannot have too much UV power, so I'd get the largest that is within your budget.

The other thing I would comment on with any unit is just be **VERY** gentle with the UV tube connector(s) and with the quartz glass sleeve. (err.... yep!! bust them as well!!)

Good luck choosing...
As other queries, then just come and ask here...
