i just got my new canister filter, it is a Aqua One CF700 Canister Filter, its in a 160 litre tank with 16 mbuna fish, how often should i clean this filter , what is the best way to clean them?

Canisters do not need the same level of maintainance as other filters. I tend to give mine a good clean out every 2 months but have left it 4 months before. In my Fluval 203 I just remove the media from the different compartments. Squeeze the sponges out in old tank water a number of times. Throw away and replace my filter floss, tends to get gunked up quickly. And then just rinsed and rubbed of ceramic media. Wipe over inside of canister with kitchen roll. Disconnect pipes and check for signs of cracking or wear then re connect. Check rubber O ring gasket that gives a water tight seal on canister a check for wear then replace everything and reconnect. Spray bar gets done when I can be bothered. It is also worth removing the impeller, (propeller thing attached to motor) and cleaning this + chamber it goes in with cotton buds a few times a year.

good luck

ok thanks mate, just 1 more thing, how often do i replace my carbon media in my filter?

You don't actually need it at all unless you are removing meds from your water. It does very little that is useful in a well maintained tank. Most people get rid of it and replace it with an extra layer of sponge. The only thing it does do is serve to help line the pockets of the companies who make it as it does need replacing every month. As I said though, just take out and replace.

I have the exact same one in my 170ish litre tank... great filter!

I guess you know when to clean it when the flow rate starts to slow right down... and if your worried about flow rate, check your hoses... i had the same problem. Algae would grow, and would slow down the flow...

Just put in a bucket of tank water, squeeze it, and put it back in. If its really deteiorated, keep it there but put a new foam thingy over/under it (which ever one). It might be cheaper to buy a whole pad full of media (aqua one's filter media are too expensive, and get dirty really easier = buying more media)...

With carbon, you don't really need it unless your trying to remove harmful chemicals. If you don't need it, don't bother using it. But it may be good to have it in there for about 3 months, then discard it.

Hope that helps. If you need help with anything, pm me :)
