Hi,

One of my apple snails has taken to digging down and burying himself in the substrate is this normal?

Thanks

Hi, what is the temp of your tank and what are you feeding the snail? they can do this if either the temp is too low or there isn't enough food available :)

those silly snails, they do all sorts of weird things. this is perfectly normal he is being a snail and a silly one at that.
i'd throw a waffer in just in case he is looking for food though

temp is 25 is that ok for them?, been putting cucumber in for them which they just turn up their noses at (if snails have noses lol) been putting extra catfish dissolvable disks in which they do seem to like but I'll see about getting some algae wafers for them today. Would that be the best thing? they have started to eat some of my plants which is a bit upsetting! I've tried blanched broccoli and courgette and they weren't impressed with that either! Maybe I've just got the ones that eat plants but the lady I bought them from on e-bay said they wouldn't!!

These are the ones I bought

Hi the temperature is ok, I have two yellow ones at that temp and they're active so it can't be that, if the snail does not spend long periods of time buried in the gravel and appears healthy when it is moving about then I wouldn't worry too much, perhaps it was just having a rest? the photos do indeed show pomacea bridgesii which is the type that do not eat plants although they may if underfed it appears you are feeding them well, I never bother putting broccoli in my tanks anymore it just creates a huge stench  and it takes many water changes to get rid of the smell too.
The only other thing I can think of is water quality and boisterous tank mates that may cause the snail to retreat, what is the size of tank and what other fish live there? also do you condition your tap water? snails are sensitive to the copper in our pipes, when do you notice the snail doing the burying? is it always the same one that does it?

I think it's the same one...not sure though lol Don't have a lot of other fish in there just yet corys and tetra, still a relatively new setup, it's a 240l so plenty of room for them I always use tapsafe when doing water changes and my readings are all ok (I think! :) ) tested it last night and was reading 5 for nitrite and 0 for amonia and 0 for nitrate ph is 7.4 so thought that was right for them too?

Might just be settling in they have only been in the tank a week.

Sounds fine to me :good: maybe he's just settling in as you say, just keep an eye that the inactivity doesn't go on for too long or the snail doesn't stay in the same place all the time.
