How long do they typically live for?

My friend has tried keeping them before and only gets a few weeks out of them. The LFS even mentioned that they only last a month or so but the information online suggests that they can live for a year or two...

Any one out there got 'em? What sort of life span should I expect?

At normal tropical temperatures, an apple snail is good for about a year to 15 months. In my tank it is much less because my fish won't leave them alone. I have stopped trying to keep them because they never survived very long.

you should get at least a few years out of them. Some make it to 5yrs or more. They grow big too, about 3 inches in diameter.
If your friend is losing them after only a few weeks then there is something wrong with his tank. Get the tank water checked and do some water changes. Don't use medication in tanks with snails.
